At the REDAS WSH Leadership Forum 2024 held on 25 July, Senior Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad and WSH Council Chairman Abu Bakar Mohd Nor witnessed the Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (REDAS) Management Committee representatives sign a pledge to reward and favour appointing safe contractors. This is amongst key recommendations within the WSH Guidelines for Procurement in the Construction Industry, developed by the WSH Council. In taking this safety pledge, these developers commit to:

•  Establish pre-qualification and evaluation frameworks to main contractors and sub-contractors;
•  Incorporate safety weightage of at least 5% into the tender evaluation score;
•  Track the WSH performance of all contractors; and
•  Provide incentive scheme to promote good safety performance.

During the Forum, SMS Zaqy commended private developers for emulating public developers in favouring and appointing safer contractors and rewarding them with good WSH performance. In addressing the audience, SMS Zaqy also spoke of the encouraging WSH outlook in Singapore, following last year’s record low workplace fatality rate of 0.99 per 100,000 workers. While Singapore’s WSH performance is now ranked amongst the best globally, he called on all stakeholders to maintain their WSH vigilance to sustain this momentum.

More than 100 leaders from the built environment sector attended the Forum, which showcased examples of procurement strategies and the adoption of innovative technological solutions to sustain a culture of WSH excellence. The Forum was organised by REDAS, and supported by the WSH Council and Building and Construction Authority.
