The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council organised its annual WSH Training Providers’ Forum on 3 March 2020 at the MND Auditorium. The Forum is a platform to keep training providers (TPs) abreast of the latest updates and developments on WSH and training matters. Themed “Harnessing Technology for WSH Training”, the event attracted over 130 training professionals from the various training organisations, including SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).
Mr Silas Sng, Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health, shared in his opening remarks three areas TPs could play a key role in:
(i) Help fight against COVID-19 by monitoring the health of their trainees, and sharing videos to educate and allay the fears of workers.
(ii) Build up WSH capability and partner the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to prevent fraudulent training activities by uploading training records into MOM’s Training Record System (TRS). This would enable employers to verify the authenticity of their workers’ certificates.
(iii) Change the pedagogy of WSH training through technology adoption. This is to enable workers to learn different scenarios at the workplace through a more immersive experience and relate better to actual worksite conditions, thus enabling better absorption of WSH knowledge. Consequently, MOM would be working towards infusing technology requirements into selected courses.
The Forum also showcased technology offerings by four technology solutions providers to help TPs kickstart the adoption of technologies. The solutions providers are Beca (S) Pte Ltd, Eon Reality Pte Ltd, Cubic Technologies Singapore Pte Ltd, and Gnowbe Pte Ltd.
SSG also shared with participants the status of MOM’s WSH courses transiting to WSQ framework.
Lastly, MOM shared previous fraudulent cases against errant Accredited Training Providers who issued fake Building Construction Supervisors Safety Course certificates, and the increasing trend of fake SSG’s Statement of Attainment certificates. TPs are reminded to upload training records of workers in MOM’s TRS to help combat fraudulent certificates issued by the syndicates.
Participants fed back that the forum was very informative, and they had gained valuable insights into the possibilities of how technology could transform training.
