On 16 October 2024, the healthcare industry held its inaugural Community of Practice (CoP) for its workplace safety and health (WSH) practitioners. Established by the WSH Council (Healthcare) Committee, the CoP aims to create a platform dedicated to WSH, for industry counterparts to support one another in their journey to strengthen their best practices.

In his Opening Address, Mr Vincent Phang, Deputy Chairman of the WSH Council, highlighted that although the number of major injuries within the industry went down in recent years, minor injuries remained a concern. He urged the industry to keep up their WSH efforts so that healthcare workers can remain safe and healthy while they care for our community.

Associate Professor Lim Boon Leng, Chief Risk Officer of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), also highlighted the unique risks faced by the healthcare industry, and the importance of the CoP so that the industry could share best practices and discuss solutions to challenges. Co-organised by the SGH, the event also recognised winners and participants of Project Empowerment, a poster-making contest set up by the Committee to encourage healthcare institutions to showcase initiatives promoting WSH ownership.  SGH also engaged participants in a presentation on Design for WSH in Healthcare for Staff, Patients and Visitors.

To help the industry prevent slips, trips, and falls (STFs), its top contributor of major and minor injuries, participants were also informed of a project team set up to develop solutions by examining root causes and designing appropriate solutions so as to tackle STFs more effectively. An STF Awareness Kit has also been developed and shared with the industry.

The CoP for WSH Officers in Healthcare is open to any personnel involved in WSH in the healthcare industry.  Members of the healthcare industry interested to join future sessions may reach out to us at: contact@wshc.sg
