The Safe Hands Campaign 2023
This year’s Safe Hands Campaign, organised by the WSH Council and hosted by SLB on 30 March, focuses on the Metalworking sub-sector, which has the highest incidence of hand and finger injuries within the manufacturing industry.
Senior Minister of State for Manpower Mr Zaqy Mohamad gave the opening address, where he expressed concern that the Manufacturing sector remained the second highest contributor of major injuries, with 122 major injuries in 2022. He called on companies to take greater ownership to curb such injuries, and said that more targeted efforts would be made towards promoting machinery safety. Unveiling a new programme where companies could get their machinery certified and verified in accordance to SS 537-1 (the Code of Practice for Safe Use of Machinery), from May 2023 onwards, SMS Zaqy also shared that his Ministry would conduct specialised operations from April to June 2023, targeting Manufacturing and Construction activities involving the use of higher-risk machinery.
In a presentation focused on their four safety pillars namely Leadership, Employee Engagement, Training and Reporting, and Compliance, SLB shared more about their in-house campaigns, programmes and awards for their staff. The hybrid event was well attended with about 100 participants onsite, and 800 participants online.
Companies were also encouraged to pledge your commitment to prevent hand and finger injuries to your workers. Collaterals such as, GIFs, pictograms and a video were also launched as part of the Campaign, and are available below:
- Machine Safety Animated Video
- Download GIFs on Checking all moving parts are guarded, Keeping hands away from moving machine parts, and Lock out and tag out before repair and maintenance.
